Research Areas

Early Language Learning

We study how early language experiences shape how deaf children learn and grow.  We consider how deaf children learn to manage their visual attention, and how early language exposure affects child development.

Sign Language Research

We advance sign language research by documenting how languages work. Our work often leverages artificial intelligence and innovative data collection methods to deepen understanding and enable new technologies.

Deaf Education

We research sign and print literacy, focusing on bilingual pedagogy that integrates visual and written language. A focal area is on educational practices and environments where Black Deaf, DeafBlind, and multilingual learners can thrive.

Resources and Datasets

We have developed a number of datasets and software applications that can be used for research purposes. We have also built ASL assessments that are freely available.
