Marshall Hurst
Communications Specialist
Marshall Hurst is a proud second-generation Deaf person from Ontario, Canada, where he was raised in a close-knit Deaf family in the scenic countryside near Niagara Falls. Growing up, Marshall navigated mainstream schooling while being deeply rooted in the rich culture and values of his Deaf heritage.
After high school, Marshall pursued higher education at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This academic foundation gave him a solid understanding of organizational dynamics and leadership.
Marshall’s passion for bilingual education was nurtured from a young age, thanks to his mother, who dedicated over 15 years to teaching Deaf students. Her commitment to fostering bilingualism inspired Marshall to advocate for equitable and language-rich education for Deaf children.
Guided by this philosophy, Marshall made a career shift into Deaf Education. Determined to make a meaningful impact, he joined Boston University (BU)'s Masters of Deaf Education program, where he aligns with the university’s dedication to bilingual approaches in Deaf education.
Marshall actively contributes to research, collaborating with Amy and Naomi on groundbreaking projects on language acquisition and deprivation in deaf kids nationwide.
This spring, Marshall is excited to bring his knowledge and passion to life during his practicum, where he will continue to champion bilingualism and make a lasting difference in the lives of Deaf children.
