Andrew Bottoms
Program Director
Andrew R. Bottoms is a second-generation Deaf individual raised in North Carolina. As the Senior Lecturer and Director of Deaf Studies at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development, Andrew is deeply committed to advancing the teaching of American Sign Language (ASL) and fostering an inclusive, empowering environment for both Deaf and hearing individuals.
Andrew's expertise lies in ASL literature and curriculum development, with a focus on promoting linguistic access for Deaf youth and fostering a sense of identity through ASL, Deaf Culture, Deaf Literature, and Deaf History. His academic journey includes a bachelor's degree in ASL and Deaf Studies and a master's degree in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University, where he developed his ability to convey complex concepts with clarity.
A passionate global traveler, Andrew has engaged with Deaf communities worldwide, gaining a broad understanding of Deaf cultures that enriches his contributions to the field. He has developed and taught numerous courses at Boston University, ranging from ASL children's literature to social justice in Deaf communities, always ensuring his curriculum is adaptable and inclusive for diverse learners.
In addition to his academic roles, Andrew is committed to building strong connections between universities and the Deaf community. He has organized a wide array of events, including the Deaf World Lecture Series at Boston University, which serves to deepen students' understanding of Deaf culture while creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with the Deaf community.
