Naomi Caselli

Co-Director

Naomi's research investigates how early language experiences influence language development in deaf children, with a focus on making language science inclusive of sign languages. Her work explores the acquisition, structure and processing of sign languages, and how artificial intelligence can be used to increase accessibility for sign language users. Caselli is internationally recognized for developing widely used open-access sign language databases that support research in language acquisition and processing.Naomi Caselli’s research has been backed by $7-million in grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Administration for Community Living (ACL). In addition to her role at the Deaf Center, she leads the BU AI & Education Initiative. Caselli is internationally known for creating open-access sign language databases that are widely used in research. She has delivered more than 30 invited talks and authored 25 peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals, including Psychological Science, Cognition, and the Journal of Pediatrics.
