Arielle Spellun
Director of Health and Wellbeing
Arielle H. Spellun MD (she/her) is a hearing developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. She studied American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies during her undergraduate education and is a board certified pediatrician with special training in child development and behavior.
Clinically, Dr. Spellun conducts developmental assessments and provides longitudinal care for children with developmental differences and disabilities with a special focus on caring for children who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and their families at Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Dr. Spellun’s research focuses on how the clinical world can improve developmental and linguistic outcomes for DHH children, particularly those from historically underrepresented and under-resourced communities, by educating medical providers on the research supporting early visual language access and improving patient and family access to ASL, community organizations, and hearing related health care.
Since, 2021, Dr. Spellun has worked closely on interdisciplinary teams with the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program of the Maternal Child Health Bureau, both regionally with the Massachusetts Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program, and nationally with the American Academy of Pediatrics to advise on programing, guidelines, educational materials, and service delivery for DHH children between the ages of 0 to 3 years.
