Michael Higgins

Michael Higgins is at The Learning Center for the Deaf, serving as the Director of Instruction and Assessment. He is a doctoral student at Boston University, studying Language and Literacy. He holds a Master's degree in Bilingual Teaching from the University of California, San Diego and brings extensive experience in deaf education, curriculum development, and organizational leadership to his work.

Mike served as a classroom teacher at KDES and MSSD before enrolling at Boston University, where he served as an instructor in the Deaf Education program and supervised the first-year graduate student placement experience. Mike's research interests center on language development and literacy instruction for deaf learners. He is currently examining the effects of ASL rhymes on deaf children's development.

As a director for Hands Land, Mike supported the development of a comprehensive 40-week curriculum centered on language play used by schools for the deaf across the country. His work focuses on strengthening bilingual education, advancing instructional practice, and promoting equitable language development for deaf learners. Through his research, teaching, and innovative curriculum design, Mike is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and ensuring language access for all deaf students.
